VMworld Europe 2018: Enabling a More Digital, Connected Enterprise

Joe Baguley, vice president and CTO, EMEA, VMware

Anyone who knows me knows that this is my favourite (and also busiest!) week of the year. And this year is even more special.

We announced huge leaps at VMworld U.S. My friend and colleague, Cameron Haight, recapped the news in his article, VMware at 20: What’s Next? Only two months after all the amazing tech announced in Vegas, VMware dropped some incredible news this week at VMworld Europe. Like I said, we’re innovating faster than ever before.

Additionally, we’re celebrating VMware’s 20th birthday. I’m so honoured to have been allowed to be on this journey alongside you. Thanks also to all of my EPIC colleagues, who daily help businesses globally innovate for tomorrow and realise what’s possible.

But, let’s be honest: at the end of the day, we gather in Barcelona to hang out with other tech enthusiasts, geeks, nerds, or whatever moniker you like in order to hear about and share cool new technology. So, let’s dive in.

Cloud, Cloud, Cloud

We know that cloud is an essential part of every company’s digital foundation. That’s why cloud innovation is a top priority for us at VMware.

Organisations that I talk to today operate in the multi-cloud era and are mixing two approaches—hybrid cloud and native public cloud—to support their expanding set of applications as well as their adoption of new capabilities, such as machine learning (ML), Kubernetes and advanced analytics. While each cloud model is unique, they are complementary, existing simultaneously within the same organisation. At their core, they share the common drive to deliver innovative services back to the business.

VMware invests in solutions that address multi-cloud environments, advancing the hybrid cloud opportunities from the data centre to the cloud to the edge and addressing the needs of native public cloud operations.

Today at VMworld Europe, we announced many key innovations, including:

VMware and AWS Accelerate Global Roll Out of VMware Cloud on AWS

Today, VMware announced the expansion of VMware Cloud on AWS in Europe and the United States, with expected additional new regions forthcoming in AWS EU (Ireland), AWS West (N. California) and AWS East (Ohio) in Q4 2018. VMware also announced new capabilities for this hybrid cloud service that will enable customers to better protect and secure applications and virtual desktops.

For the first time, we’re launching in multiple regions simultaneously, while continuing to drive innovation into our global footprint of data centres. VMware Cloud on AWS is becoming the preferred environment for customers migrating VMware-based workloads to the cloud. And with more than 200 partners achieving solution competency in just six months, the industry support is stronger than ever. With today’s launch, we’re giving our customers an even stronger hybrid cloud solution to support their most demanding application needs, with the enhanced security and scale they require and accelerating at a dramatic rate.

VMware Cloud on AWS brings VMware’s enterprise class software-defined data centre (SDDC) to the AWS Cloud. Based on VMware Cloud Foundation, this hybrid cloud service delivers consistent infrastructure and consistent operations from the data centre to the cloud, enabling customers to seamlessly migrate to the cloud, scale on demand and deliver on next-generation application strategies. Jointly engineered by VMware and AWS, applications deployed in this environment benefit from robust disaster protection and optimised access to AWS services.

With today’s launch, we’re giving our customers an even stronger hybrid cloud solution to support their most demanding application needs with the security and scale they require.

VMware Cloud Innovations Accelerate Growth and Transformation of Cloud Providers across Europe

The VMware Cloud Provider program (a particular passion of mine) continues to be strong across Europe. More than half of our VMware Cloud Verified partners come from this region.

“VMware Cloud Verified partners are a set of strategic partners offering complete VMware SDDC-as-a-service with value-added services and support,” says Ajay Patel, senior vice president and general manager, cloud provider software business unit, VMware. “As European businesses expand within the region and even across the globe, VMware Cloud Provider Partners, such as OVH, Rackspace, Telefonica and Tieto, offer customers modern VMware-based cloud solutions with consistent infrastructure and operations—exactly the same technology our customers are using in their data centres—and a portfolio of managed multi-cloud infrastructure and operations services.”

Today, VMware announced the continued growth in VMware Cloud Verified partners, with 27 including more than a dozen partners across Europe now holding the VMware Cloud Verified designation—up from only five a year ago. VMware Cloud Verified partners have fully deployed VMware Cloud infrastructure and enable customers the performance and scale to support their application requirements.

VMware Validated Designs (VVDs) for Cloud Providers are now available, enabling partners to deploy and operate VMware cloud infrastructure for a wide range of use cases and provide a fast, proven path to achieving VMware Cloud Verified status.

Digital Workspace for Every Choice, Everywhere

Modern Management Embraces Heterogeneity

2018 has been a transformative year for our VMware Workspace ONE platform, which continues to astound customers when I show them it on my own devices. Ask any of my colleagues to tell you how they use it. With the previous launch of Workspace ONE Intelligence and the Workspace ONE Trust Network, we introduced the industry’s first intelligence-driven digital workspace platform. At VMworld U.S. 2018, we unveiled innovations to accelerate customers’ adoption of modern management as they fully transition to Windows 10 and embrace Mac, iOS, Android and Chromebooks. With today’s announcement, we continue to deliver new capabilities at a blistering pace that fully embrace the heterogeneity we see across customers in the industry today. And we have no intention of slowing down.

Today, we unveiled new capabilities to VMware’s intelligence-driven Workspace ONE platform that provide modern management and security advancements for customers’ heterogeneous environments, as well as richer employee experiences across more apps and devices. Leveraging new in-platform innovations and integrations that tie into ecosystem partner solutions, Workspace ONE continues to expand the breadth and depth of platforms and capabilities that organisations can tap into.

As quickly as enterprise technology evolves, consumer tech is even faster. As soon as we think we’ve caught up, an employee brings in something new. That’s why modern management is so important. And that’s why we continue to innovate to help businesses achieve a digital workspace that supports every choice everywhere. We work hard to keep you one step ahead.
