It’s incredible what organizations can accomplish by doing business in the cloud, from helping end hunger to delivering online government services that improve lives. With such successes enabled by relatively simple cloud environments, what are the possibilities when organizations innovate across multiple clouds?
VMware CEO, Pat Gelsinger, believes that multi-cloud architectures will change the way businesses innovate and, ultimately, transform the world.
“We see a world where the most powerful services can be instantly accessed from any cloud, where you are freed from rigid, siloed architectures. Envision a state where you can move more rapidly and bring to market new services that are more powerful than ever. You could operate this entire, diverse landscape of services seamlessly and securely. This is a world where you are not bound by the source of the capability, but freed for the limitless potential of your business,” Gelsinger says at the VMware Cloud Briefing.
Realizing unfettered, multi-cloud operations is a journey that happens over time. “Increasingly, our customers are on a multi-cloud journey, bringing together the worlds of hybrid and native public cloud into a single, comprehensive strategy,” Gelsinger says.
The Cloud Journey
The cloud journey doesn’t look the same for every organization. The three most common stages include leveraging hybrid cloud, managing a multi-cloud model and building modern apps.
“83 percent of cloud buyers seek consistent infrastructure and operations from the data center to the cloud.”

1. Hybrid Cloud
In a hybrid-cloud architecture, an organization’s data center becomes part of a large pool of resources available in private cloud, public cloud and/or edge environments. Many start the cloud journey with what they already have (existing and often strategic data center investments). The key here is maintaining a consistent infrastructure and consistent operations to ease the transition and simplify management.
2. Multi-Cloud Management
Organizations move into multi-cloud architectures to tap resources and services from any cloud provider. The goal here is to unify cloud operations so that diverse infrastructure doesn’t stall access to innovation. “Customers want access to any cloud service, with the flexibility to choose the exact service that best drives their business,” Gelsinger says. “But working across multiple providers brings natural complexity and, with it, inefficiency and risk.”

3. Modern Apps
Mission-critical applications — at the core of digital transformation — grow increasingly complex and diverse. The solution: modern, cloud-native applications that take less time for developers to build and ship.
A cloud-native architecture helps organizations build and deliver these modern applications that accelerate innovation. But, organizations must overcome infrastructure and operational challenges to balance productivity benefits with security and efficiency.
The Cloud Foundation
Cloud technologies enable IT to focus on the highest priorities and most strategic initiatives, defining the future of business for decades. More than ever, leaders consider cloud to be a long-term, strategic investment.
The shift from multi-cloud adoption to multi-cloud strategy calls for more holistic decision-making and architectural planning. Organizations need to consider questions like:
- What’s the best environment for the needs of each application, based on desired business outcomes?
- How can IT freely move applications from the data center to the cloud and to the edge?
- How should organizations quickly and strategically adopt new cloud services that emerge?
- How can developers aggressively leverage Kubernetes container orchestration, a standard for modern apps, to do great things?
- What cloud foundation can IT create now that will have the greatest longevity into the future?
- Where will your cloud journey begin?

Migrate to the cloud. Scale on demand. Unify multi-cloud operations. Build modern apps.
A Multi-Cloud Vision
Partners, like VMware, help organizations answer these questions and create a solid foundation for cloud. At the VMware Cloud Briefing event, Gelsinger highlights five ways VMware intends to help propel companies towards a multi-cloud vision:
- Accelerating the cloud journey — no matter where it begins — with a cornerstone platform for cloud foundation.
- Solving complexity in the cloud with joint innovations, partnerships and new perspectives from cloud leaders.
- Delivering a blueprint to manage a multi-cloud architecture.
- Introducing the next generation of cloud management.
- Enabling enterprise Kubernetes.
“Looking back, we’re incredibly proud of the foundation we’ve built for today’s cloud market,” Gelsinger says. “And as we build for this new multi-cloud generation, we’re excited about what’s to come. But one thing we know for sure, this journey has just begun.”
