The Evolution of the Digital Workspace Has Arrived

VMware announced new innovations to its VMware Workspace ONE digital workspace platform. According to Sumit Dhawan, the news goes far beyond technology updates, focusing on delivering innovative employee experiences that drive true digital transformation.

“All too often, conversations about digital transformation are centred around apps, devices, and hardware instead of its true driving force—employees,” Dhawan, VMware End-User Computing executive vice president and general manager, wrote today in VentureBeat. “Empowered employees are at the heart of digital transformation, and companies that boost employee access to the technology they need, when and how they need it, increase their organisation’s overall performance.”

The Evolution of the Digital Workspace: Intelligence, Security, and Employee Productivity

The tug of war between IT and end users has been waged for years, starting with the personal computer in the early 1990s and gaining momentum with heterogenous mobility and apps. Thanks to new capabilities announced today within its VMware Workspace ONE platform, Dhawan believes that tug of war is changing into a productive and secure digital workspace ecosystem that brings IT and employees together at last.

Customers like Brian Troudy, director of networking and infrastructure for Corona-Norco Unified School District, agree. “This new service will provide us with a way to automate security practices and give us access to metrics that will help us improve user experience for our teachers, administrators, and students. That is a clear win-win for our staff and IT team,” Troudy said in the Workspace ONE press release from VMware.

Among the many new capabilities of Workspace ONE, two innovative new technologies fuel what VMware calls the industry’s first intelligent digital workspace: Workspace ONE Intelligence and Workspace ONE Trust Network.

Workspace ONE Intelligence

The new Workspace ONE Intelligence technology is a cloud-based software that enables IT to leverage artificial intelligence within the digital workspace. Using the integration with the Workspace ONE platform, IT can monitor endpoints, apps and operating system performance and then automate responses to improve performance and security. The new “decision engine” lets IT create rules and automate common tasks, including patch updates, access controls, and alerts.

“This upcoming release sets the foundation for using artificial intelligence and machine learning to make recommendations and predictions across the digital workspace and is a major advancement for the Workspace ONE platform,” Renu Upadhyay, VMware End-User Computing director of product marketing, wrote in her blog today:

Introducing the New Intelligence-Driven Digital Workspace

Workspace ONE Trust Network

New cybersecurity threats arise every day, and IT continues to place security at the forefront of digital initiatives. To help IT mitigate risk inside and outside of its digital workspace perimeter, VMware today announced the new Workspace ONE Trust Network. This “modern approach to digital workspace security” extends Workspace ONE Intelligence and APIs to a network of trusted industry leaders in security, including Carbon Black, CrowdStrike, Cylance, Lookout, McAfee, Netskope, and Symantec.

“As the digital workspace evolves, integrating security solutions to our Workspace ONE platform is critical so that customers can continue to leverage their existing investments,” Upadhyay wrote. “These partners bring great security expertise across different aspects of the digital workspace and are excited to support the Workspace ONE Trust Network.”

Rounding out today’s VMware End-User Computing announcements are:

  • Workspace ONE Airlift, a new connector that co-exists with Microsoft System Centre Configuration Management (SCCM) to ease organisations’ Windows 10 migrations with more cost-effective and secure cloud-based management.
  • New macOS client for Workspace ONE that helps IT unify endpoint management for all users on every device and operating system. Now, employees can access all their apps—including virtual Windows apps—from any device, including those running macOS.
  • Enhanced security for Microsoft Office 365 apps.
  • Intelligent workflows for VMware Boxer mobile email, enabling context-based actions for many applications, including Salesforce, Jira, Concur, and more, without leaving the Boxer app.
  • VMware Horizon Cloud on Microsoft Azure virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) beta.

“In the era of digital transformation, empowered employees make the difference between companies that will flourish and companies that will fade into irrelevancy,” Dhawan wrote. “An intelligent digital workspace provides employees with the apps needed to accelerate innovation—when, where, and how they want to access these. And it’s providing IT with an automated, predictive security approach to protect against threats while delivering the best employee experience.”
